Review of Koroni area by holidaymaker 2010 ...
Following the Peloponnese coast
August 10 2010
By Amar Grover
The Peloponnese doesn't exactly boast instant recognition on the holiday circuit ' and that's half its charm.
Situated in the south-west, it's a more low-key and traditional part of mainland Greece, ...it packs in more sights than most of Greece's island groups put together.
Koroni is a beautiful fishing village in Messinia, with amazing beaches and narrow alleys of stone steps and is built amphitheatrically overlooking the small bay overlooked by a great Venetian castle. Methoni (a nice day trip) also has Castle.
Down at the harbourfront, cafes, ice cream parlours, taverns and restaurants offer traditional food and delicacies, while locals and visitors enjoy a stroll around the small harbour, a safe marina for fishing boats and yachts. The shoþs and eating establishments sþeak English. Wide sandy Memi beach 1 Km from village centre.
The village houses are painted with three colors (mostly white, yellow and blue) and azure or red windows. Narrow medieval lane of steps lined with houses of white lime wash flanked by white stone walls atopped with flowerpots holding flowers of many colors, leads from village centre's main church square to the castle. Anastasia, this website's writer, comes here each year as an independent traveller.
ROAD DIRECTIONS
For Koroni, turn right not left out of Kalamata Airport and continue south, following signs for Koroni. Till you get to Rizomilos, then follow signs for Pylos for best road. Past Pylos, follow signs Koroni again. You pass Methoni. All good for coffee or dinner stop.
About 45 minute drive (30 Km) from Kalamata Airport (KLX) and a straight, flat coastal road. Worth a visit.
English newspapers in Koroni, and Heinz soup and Brit cereals at Sipsas supermarket on the road into Koroni (large free car park to left as enter Koroni).
One way system. Go in past Sipsas supermarket and come out by road that passes the Koroni Castle (cannot drive up to castle as cul-de-sac). Not all Greeks pay attention to the one way system, but best for you not to get a ticket from the local Police. Narrow medieval lanes - give priority to Greek drivers - it's best to let them get on with it.
