FINIKOUNDA - ΦΙΝΙΚΟΥΝΤΑ

Resources

Finikounda is 10 Km from Methoni and 20 Km from Pylos, by wide, well maintained road, with spectacular sea views en route.

Just past Finikounda, en route to Methoni, is a mini market with car park on the right.

Coming from Methoni towards Finikounda is an Atlantic Supermarket on the right, which has a large sign calling it the Medusa Centre.

Turning into Finikounda, you pass a large painted church on your way to the sea front. and the cafe society.

On the front is a row of shops selling good class homeware, art and craft, a jewellers, Greek paintings, and locally produced Olive oil beauty products.

The restaurants are right on the beachfront where authentic Greek recipes can be enjoyed.

One coffe and ice cream cafe, accessed through a stone classical archway, has a wi-fi internet room to keep in contact with family or business.

At the height of the end of the sea front road is Elena's restaurant which gives a commanding view over the whole beachfront, bay and islets beyond.

As Finikounda beach gives a shorter breadth of shallow seabed and then goes deep, it makes it ideal to bring in yachts onto 'dry dock' care, as well as good for wind-surfing, with the protection from the open sea by being girthed by rocky islets toff shore, as there is no land between Greece and Africa here.

Like all towns in SW Peloponnese, it is very well policed as it is an national border, but the Police have little to do in this quiet corner of rural Greece.

Only once an afternoon does the patrolling jet sweep over the bay to reassure.

As Finikounda was marketed by Kosmar as the resort 'that your friends will never have heard of', and so unsurprisingly Kosmar went bankrupt (XL Airways) and Finikounda has remained off the beaten track and far from the maddening crowds, until the Athenians are let out the few times a year to enjoy (weekend bank holidays and the month of August), when they pour onto the long beach like a tidal wave of cars and coaches. Other than those times, you can easily find a restaurant seat, a beach spot and space to meander amongst the good class shopping opportunities.

It has a large car park and spectacular views over a pristine sea.

ATELIER SUD Artists' Studio

Open every day

0930 am until 8pm

Many of customers have become collectors of their art work.

From my visit, the paintings reminded me of my Greek childhood by painting a vanishing Greece in architecture and village life.

The homeware of sculptures, pottery and textiles make a home in the locality authentically Greek in look and feel.

The Artists' Studio has been in its location for many years now.
